21. Unit #6 New Orleans and Early Jazz in Google Classroom

21. Unit #6 New Orleans and Early Jazz

New Orleans’ geographical location and French influence create a unique environment in the American South. Weekly gatherings at Congo Square allowed slaves and their descendants a chance to celebrate their African roots and paved the way for a sound that would become known as jazz. The New Orleans jazz musicians absorbed the brass band and ragtime traditions and added a loose, more spontaneous approach in the form of improvisation.

Due:

22. Unit #5 Ragtime in Google Classroom

22. Unit #5 Ragtime

At its essence, ragtime is a combination of Sousa-style marching music played with a syncopated sense of swing that is African-American in origin. Ragtime evolved in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, primarily in urban settings like bars, dance halls, and “houses of ill repute,” as these were the only kinds of places in which African-American musicians were generally allowed to perform. When played on piano, ragtime is characterized by a steady march-like pulse in the left hand and a “ragged” (or syncopated) feel in the right hand. A ragged feel is created by grouping the notes in such a way as to allow the stress to bounce back and forth between the dominant beats (1, 2, 3, 4) and weak beats (the “ands”). The “back and forth” of the ragged feel made it very danceable. Ragtime’s eventual rise to mainstream popularity was an early example of how the blend of European-American and African-American cultures would be defining characteristic of American popular music.
